Be Still… Even When Pressure Is Pressing You to Move
“Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for Him; do not fret because of him who prospers in his way, because of the man who brings wicked schemes to pass.”
~ Psalm 37:7 NKJV
There are moments in life when God slows you down before you even realize you were moving too fast. These moments may feel like an inconvenience but end up revealing something deeper. This was one of those moments for me. A simple stop at the tracks turned into a lesson I didn’t know I needed.
While I’m sitting at the train tracks, the crossarm is down, and the lights are flashing like a train is coming, but there’s no train anywhere in sight. Ten minutes go by and still nothing. Some cars turn around, others maneuver through the crossarm and go over the tracks, and the people behind me are blowing their horns, waiting on me to follow suit.
I’m sitting trying to decide if I’m going to turn around or go around the crossarm like everybody else and I hear that still small voice, “Be still. I’m not in a rush, why are you?”
That instantly stopped me in my tracks because nothing about the situation was even requiring me to move. The only thing pushing me was the impatience of the people around me and the pressure of looking foolish for staying put when everyone else was choosing to move. That’s when I realized this wasn’t just a delay. God was using the moment to get my attention.
I stayed, and while I was sitting there, I put my car in park and reached for my journal because I could feel the Holy Spirit starting to pour into me and give me the revelation I needed for myself and the words I needed to write this blog.
We watch everybody around us moving and making what seems like progress, and something in us starts feeling like we’re falling behind. We don’t want it to look like we’re stuck or stagnant, so we start trying to match their pace without even thinking, with no prayer, no meditation, and no confirmation guiding us.
Everything that looks like progress isn’t always progress. We don’t know what they compromised, what lines they crossed, what pressure they’re carrying now, or what consequences are waiting for them later. We only see the movement, not the cost.
And sitting at those tracks made me realize how quickly outside pressure can pull us out of alignment. The pressure to move instead of taking that time to rest in God could have taken me straight into something he was trying to protect me from. That crossarm could have been protecting me from an accident, a shooting, a ticket, or anything. That delay wasn’t random, it was intentional, it had a purpose because I had no idea what schemes the enemy had waiting ahead of me during that time period that my obedience to listen to God and be still in that moment intercepted.
Maybe that’s where you are right now. Standing in front of something you feel should have moved by now. Something you prayed for, prepared for, and expected to see progress in. Instead, you’re facing stillness while everyone else seems to be moving with ease.
I get it, that kind of waiting can make you question yourself. Not because God told you to move, but because watching others move makes you feel like you should be doing the same. It makes you wonder if you missed something or if you’re somehow behind.
But stillness doesn’t mean nothing is happening. God uses pauses to protect, prepare, and position us. His timing is never rushed, and it’s never late. Sometimes the only reason we feel behind is because we’re comparing our God‑led pace to someone else’s self‑led movement.
When God asks you to wait, he’s not withholding anything from you. He’s keeping you from stepping into something that isn’t ready or something that isn’t meant for you. Moving with the crowd can lead you into places you were never assigned to be.
So if you’re in a season where something you feel should have moved by now is still sitting still, hear this: God has not forgotten about you. He’s protecting you in ways you can’t see yet. You are not behind and you are not being overlooked. You are exactly where God needs you to be at this very moment.
Your delay has purpose. When God lifts the crossarm and tells you it’s time to move, you won’t have to force anything. You’ll move with clarity, peace, and confidence because you waited for his timing, not the crowd’s.
Your moment is coming. And when it comes, you’ll understand why he asked you to wait.
Until then, Be Still… Even When Pressure Is Pressing You to Move!
