Cracked But Called: When Broken Things Start Speaking

“But God has chosen the foolish things of the world to put to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to put to shame the things which are mighty; and the base things of the world and the things which are despised God has chosen, and the things which are not, to bring to nothing the things that are.”

~1 Corinthians 1:27–28 NKJV

I was talking with someone recently who was hesitant to walk in what God was calling them to do. As they shared their heart, God brought a memory back to me; one I knew I needed to share with them, and now with you. It’s a reminder that God speaks even through what’s broken and written off as useless.

A few years ago, the guy who came to replace my over‑the‑range microwave dropped it right on my stove and didn’t say a word. After he left, I noticed the crack and just stood there staring at it, wondering if it would still work or if the whole thing was ruined. That same week, I dropped my phone and cracked the screen. Then I tripped over the cord to my clock, and it fell off my desk and cracked too.

At that point, I knew God was trying to get my attention. After praying and sitting with it for a while, it finally clicked.

Three objects. All broken within the same week. Yet even with the damage, they still worked and because they still worked, they were still useful.

I had been waiting on someone to tell me what God needed to show me. Yes, I had some scars, cracks, and bruises; but they did not disqualify me from being useful to him. Until I could replace what was broken and get something new, I had to use what I had.

The stove still baked.

The phone still connected.

The clock still told the time and kept sounding the alarm as expected.

Some people throw broken things away without a second thought, whether they still work or not. But God does the opposite. He picks them up, restores them piece by piece, and then sets them on display for his glory as proof of his power.

So even while God is revealing, healing, mending, molding, and restoring you, you are still useful to him.

Someone still needs the fire that’s in you.

Someone still needs your connection to the throne of grace.

Someone still needs your voice to announce the signs of the time and sound the alarm.

Stop letting the fear of being flawed, your past, or a few nicks, scrapes, and bruises hold you back. God uses the foolish things of the world to confound the wise. So just because your pieces don’t look like a masterpiece yet, don’t count yourself out.

You are a work in progress. You are the clay, and God is the potter. He shapes what the world overlooks, and he speaks through what others disregard. And in the process of time, he will mold you and remake you in the way he sees fit.

If God can get glory out of a cracked stove, a cracked phone, and a cracked clock…

He can definitely get glory out of you!
